About Elen Jones Ceramics
My interest in working with clay both in sculpture and throwing began quite a few years back. Initially I dabbled in courses and private study, always believing that my love for ceramics could only ever be a means of release from a pressured career in teaching. With commitments both in my professional as well as personal life, ceramics was unfortunately put on hold. Seeing an opportunity at the Kiln Rooms in Peckham to become a studio member was a game changer, providing me with a space to develop my skills, knowledge and understanding of ceramics through short courses, professional influence and shared practice amongst fellow ceramicists and potters. I have since relocated to North Wales where I have close family ties. The stunning landscape that surrounds me is of immense comfort and creative influence.
Compelled by childhood memories of both the Swale in Kent and the Preseli Mountains in Pembrokshire, my workr recalls vivid accounts of feeling in awe and wonder which is linked to geology and place. My work celebrates the properties of both rock fomations and clay material and the powerful and overwhelming force of these elements in nature. Through application and process, the vulnerability of the manmade object under the force of geological elements is put into focus. Metaphorical meaning and personal experience intertwine in my work, through consideration of landscape, geography and location linked to memory.
Recently I graduated with a Distinction in MA Ceramics from the University of Creative Arts. Having the opportunity to expand my understanding and build upon my ideas has an artist has been a huge privilege, not only helping to fine-tune my practice but provide clarity and direction as an artist.
